It's a common misconception that all animals can keep themselves warm under any conditions, just because they have a coat of fur that we don't. This can be a deadly assumption for our favorite house pets, as they are just as vulnerable to the effects of cold and heat as we are.
On a hot day and under most circumstances, your cat should be able to find a shaded area or somewhere moderately cool to help regulate their body temp. On a cold day, all your cat has is their coat and the heat you provide them with.
It's a much better idea to get them a heated cat bed, that comes with a warranty, than simply throwing a blanket on the floor and hoping that will do the trick. A heated cat bed will also give you the option of turning the heat down if you have to go on a vacation, or spend several hours of the day away from home working. Most good units will come with a safety-rated heating element that's encased in a comfy bedding material.
You don't necessarily need to break your bank and purchase the most expensive heated cat bed on the market, but it's a good idea not to buy the absolute cheapest either. While most of the bedding material of any pet bed will be made with common materials used to keep your cat from ripping the bed to pieces: The heating elements used in "Bargain Barn" units may not last very long and most certainly won't give your favorite kitty the precious warmth they deserve.
The last consideration should be finding a heated bed that has adjustable settings. Low, medium and high settings would be ideal, but look for one that has at least two settings so you can tweak the bed for your cat's maximum comfort.
