Five Ways to Become a Better Writer

It takes a long time to become a talented writer. A very long time. I myself still practice away in order to obtain talented writer status. In this pursuit, I've learned some tips along the way to achieve that goal or, at least, move toward that goal.

It's easy, it's free, but it takes time. Again, a lot. But don't fret. This shouldn't discourage you because no one excels fast enough to become the best writer overnight. Shakespeare took years; Twain too was patient; and some still debate whether Melville was a good writer at all.

Er... I only joke about Melville because he undoubtedly wrote beautifully and poetically, but Moby Dick is sort of a pain. Let's not waste anymore time. Here are five ways to boost your writing abilities.

Write First, Edit Later. Editing should occur after writing. When you write, keep writing until your are finished. Trying to edit along the way will only hinder your creativity. Form does, in fact, matter, but do that later, and do it several times.

It's Not Shameful to Use a Dictionary or Thesaurus. Many gladly open up Mr. Webster, or Mr. Urban Dictionary if you're ready to admit it; however, many completely neglect the wide world of web resources that lay at our fingertips. Most word processors and/or operating systems offer a dictionary and thesaurus. In fact, a simple right click in Microsoft Word will offer "Synonyms" and a handful of creative suggestions. My German professor told me that he always highlighted word he has to look up in his English dictionary. "If I have to look it up again," he said, "then I write it on a notecard and memorize it." Danke, Professor Mueller.

Read, Read, and Read More. It is truly better to give than receive, but on the other hand, you cannot give when you never receive. Take some time and research. If you're stuck, pause a moment, take a break, then hit the books - or your web browser. Spend a few hours each day reading, make appropriate notations, and you'll never be without something to write or, at least, practice writing.

Create. Do Not Generate. If you want to make it as a writer in today's age, you most likely have a day job as well. If writing is your day job as well, then the market probably demands too much from you. Capitalism doesn't translate words into dollars as well as we would like. However, you should remember that writing is an art. Don't become a gear in the crank and burn yourself out for the sake of production. All writing, from manuals to reference work, requires creativity, and to better yourself, don't bog yourself down with over production.

Become an Editor. I don't mean become a professional editor. You can do that, but I mean as a sort of hobby-practice. When you edit your own work (when we actually do that), we tend to overlook errors because we anticipate the entire text. I mean, why do I need to read it? I wrote it! Well then, read someone else's work, and I promise this will shed some light on both your strengths and weaknesses. Better yet, partner with another writer and edit each other's work. You will build community, probably share ideas and maybe a date (if this is an opposite sex arrangement). At the very least, you improve your writing. And it's an excuse to talk to that cute, hipster chick that lives at Starbucks.

These are but five ways to become a more effective writer. Many more exist, but I have found these to be the most helpful, in addition to legal psychopharmaceuticals. Smoke breaks and coffee can also make a good writer, but it's not necessary nor necessarily good for your health. Happy writing.
