It was designed by a Harvard sophomore, Mark Zuckerberg, and his roommates and fellow computer science classmates, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. The original it was designed for Harvard students only. Its usage quickly spread throughout college and universities in the local Boston area, then spread throughout high schools, and later to anyone above the age of thirteen.

It even has a feature where it will suggest friends that are also it users who work or attend school at the same place. You can see how the network expands from there. The networking opportunities that stem from this are truly amazing.
Another popular it feature is its "friends" suggestions. Once you add your place of employment, hometown, or school, it will suggest friends or coworkers for you to add to your contact list as it reads and recognizes the common interests between you and another contact. Imagine over 500 million users connected to 500 million users. One can clearly see how it has affected our society. It has made us closer and opened communication among us. Social networking sites have made our world smaller and opened and connected ourselves more closely. It's amazing how a small idea became so big.
