Cisco is a multinational corporation with a staggering 66,000 plus employees with an annual revenue of around $39billion as of 2008. The headquarters are in San Jose, CA and the company designs and sells communication and networking technology as well as services. The name Cisco is derived from the city San Francisco.

Cisco may not the be first ever company to sell commercial routers supporting many network protocols but their routers are used to deliver a magnitude of technologies through corporate, enterprise and service provider networks. The company was listed in the Nasdag stock exchange in 1990 and one of the founders Lerner was subsequently fired because of this and Bosack quit the company but not before receiving $200 million. The majority of the profits were given to charities.

Cisco has always strived for innovation and enlists talent but purchasing up and coming companies. Some of the acquisitions that Cisco made were the largest ever M&A deals at the time. While the internet boom was starting in 1999 the company bought Cerent Corp. for approximately $7 billion dollars, the highest valued acquisition that Cisco made up to date.

In March 2000, at the apex of the dot.com craze, Cisco was by far the most valued company worldwide. With a market capitalisation of more than $500 billion, Cisco has been voted stock of the decade on NASDAG. They began marketing technology, especially in its software, more adamantly to long distance telephone companies, and due to the deregulation of US telephone carriers, the companies were able to provide more types of data communications services and products.

Cisco then expanded into the European telecommunications industry by partnering with several key companies. It enlisted the largest telecommunications companies of large European companies to become the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of Cisco's products. The companies include British Telecom of Britain, Siemans of Germany and Alcatel of France. Cisco have continued to develop strategic partnerships and are still growing.
