For nearly thirty years now, few college football teams have enjoyed more consistent success than the Miami Hurricanes. Not only do they now hold the record for the most consecutive wins at home in college football history - having during one stretch won 58 home games in a row. Things were not always so positive for the Hurricanes, and they spent much of their history without a national championship. That ended in the 1983-84 season when the Miami team won the national title at last. That event would be repeated four more times over the next twenty years, as the Hurricanes posted after a winning season and positioned themselves as one of the most elite teams in the NCAA ranks. Their winning ways have been highlighted by a total of two Heisman Award winners and a series of incredible winning streaks including the aforementioned home victory streak.
Success and resentment
The Miami Hurricanes have had a tumultuous relationship with the nation's college football fans over the years, with almost every fan having strong opinions about the program - some positive and some negative. Miami players can be seen in NFL uniforms on any given Sunday, which has caused many college fans to develop a resentment of the program. In addition, there was a period in the 1990s and early in the 2000s when Miami's teams were perhaps unfairly characterized as arrogant showboats that had a tendency to believe their own hype. While there was certainly a confident edge to those teams, the arrogant label was almost certainly unfairly given. The success of Miami players in the NFL attests to the fact that most players from the school have obviously been team-oriented. Of course, it is always easy for fans to hate any team that is more successful than their own.
What about that streak?
Much has been made of the much talked about Miami home game streak that spanned almost a decade - from 1985 until the 1994 season. While there is no doubt that 58 game run of victories is impressive, there are two other streaks that Miami enjoyed over the last couple of decades that are perhaps even more incredible. The first was from 1990 until 1993, and involved a run of 29 games won at home and in their away competitions. Ten years later the team would improve upon that streak by adding another that lasted 34 games (2000 to 2003). For many analysts, those two streaks - which included victories over their most heated rivals - serve as shining examples of the strength of the Hurricane teams of the times - it's just not that easy to consistently win in your opponent's house!
Never out of the picture
The University of Miami Hurricanes football teams have seen some difficulty in recent seasons, and the period since their last championship in 2002 has certainly not approached the glory that Miami teams provided for the previous two decades. To be certain, the Hurricanes have not advanced to the BCS Championship game since losing to Ohio State in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Nevertheless, quality players still flock to Miami every year, and most fans and experts alike recognize that the Hurricanes will continue to be a potential championship contender into the foreseeable future.
