Like most ceremonial events, weddings are steeped in traditions. Anyone that has ever gone about planning a wedding has at some point had questions about why we do certain things on our special day. For instance, where in the world did "something old, something new..." come from? Knowing where some of these special traditions originated or why they were carried out for so long often help refocus our priorities and can even add a touch of sentiment or special meaning to your special day.

Let's start with the previously mentioned rhyme. "Something old" symbolized the ties that the bride has to her "old life. "Something new" is for the new life she is beginning. "Something borrowed" is loaned to the bride by a happily married woman as a bestowing of similar happiness. "Something blue" represents purity and fidelity, a belief and tradition that is closely tied to the religious traditions that long ago defined marriage.

The classic rhyme "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" originated during Victorian times. The "something old" reference represents the ties the bride has to her old life while "something new" signifies the new life the couple will have together. "Something borrowed" was meant for a happily married woman to loan something to the bride to be in order to bestow that same happiness onto her. The final saying "something blue" signifies fidelity, love and purity.

The bride carrying flowers has come from many countries at many different times and has evolved over time to even brides carrying silk flowers simply for beauty and color. This ritual actually began as a woman carrying strong herbs such as garlic, to ward off evil spirits.

Carrying on these traditions have more than proved their importance as they have remained only slightly changed for centuries. By knowing what the customs stand for and how they came to evolve will just give you a little more special meaning on your wedding day!
