HGV, or Heavy Good Vehicle Drivers, are always in high demand across the UK. A HGV career can be a good choice for skilled drivers who are looking for something challenging and enjoyable, or simply just a career change. HGV drivers are needed for almost any kind of transportation job but there are a few skills and qualifications required before stepping up to driving a HGV.

You have to be licensed to drive a HGV and must obtain some form of training to drive the vehicle. You can receive specialised training and support through a qualified HGV training provider and the costs vary between each provider but are relatively inexpensive; the provider should prepare you fully for your HGV test and to receive your license. The best way to ensure you receive a license and past the test is to use a company that has recorded success as a HGV training or teaching school, or an experienced/qualified HGV training instructor.

You would need to apply for either a Category C HGV license which would allow you to drive a one unit HGV or a Category C+E license which allows you to drive anything with a removable trailer (for example an 'Arctic'). Most HGV drivers tend to apply for their Category C license first and, after a few years of experience, apply for their Category C+E license as vehicles such as Arctic's require much more training and skill to manoeuvre.

There are two types of tests you must take in order to receive a HGV license: a practical test and a theory test. You can take the theory test over a period of a few days of your choice as they are delivered in two parts but you must pass both parts overall in order to proceed to the practical test. The practical test will judge your awareness, skill and manoeuvres which will also include tests such as backing onto a loading bay.

HGV driving is a job that isn't to be taken lightly as the vehicles require good driving skills and manoeuvring. You also need to be an expert in high ways codes and road markings combined with the skills of driving a HGV. It is important to receive the highest quality training as some HGVs can be very difficult to handle and the correct training will ensure your time and money is well spent on passing your HGV test and receiving your license first time.
